Unleash your athletic in the most fashionable and feminine way by wearing a skater dress!
As new figure skating has stepped into the trendsetter arena, it comes as no surprise that this flamboyant contender would be next in line to influence fashionâ??s heavy hitters. Spotted on catwalks at most 2011 spring shows including Dior and Louis Vuitton, the skater dress looks set to be a winner in the fashion world.
What is the skater dress?
Reminiscent of the outfits of female figure skaters, the skater dress combines playful hemlines and whimsical fabrics to create a beautiful, feminine silhouette.
Strappy sleeves, high hemlines and low necks combine to create a dress which is surprisingly demure and flattering on any figure. As an added bonus, the skater dress is worn looser than most minidresses and cinches in at the waist, highlighting a shapely midsection and flattering curves. The dress also flares out at the waistline for a young and flirty feel.
For Louis Vuitton’s Spring/Summer show, designer Marc Jacobs created extreme looks, including embroidered skater dresses worn over Bermuda shorts and styled with Afro wigs and peg-heeled clog shoes for a retro urban feel.
On a more ladylike note, John Galliano showed delicate lace and floral frocks paired with sheer socks and sandals at Christian Dior, while Stella McCartney designed floral-print dresses, complete with bouncing swirls of ruffles and pretty pleats, for spring.
Wear it anywhere
There are a wide range of styles and interpretations of skater style, which means you’re sure to find some version thatâ??s perfect for you. The skater dress lends itself to versatility so it can be dressed up or down and worn in any season.
Add some warmth to winter by wearing a brightly patterned skater dress with over a black long-sleeved sweater and finish with thick black stockings and boots à là Stella McCartney. For a touch of romance in the warmer seasons, pastel colours in beautiful spring prints and a cinched waist show off your feminine figure and a make a pretty statement.
Working the trend
If youâ??re still not sure how to work this trend, consider the quartet of fashionable femmes pictured, who clearly show the diversity of the skater dress and why it should be a necessary component of your wardrobe.
Take a page from Stella McCartney’s playbook and opt for a more slinky style; the designer did just that when she wore her own Pleated Silk Dress to attend the Love Ball at the Roundhouse in London. The ruffle details on the dress give it a light and playful touch (perfect for any spring event) while the black opaque tights ground McCartney’s look and help her transition the frock through spring’s colder moments.
The skater dress can also take on an edgy interpretation with fitted silhouettes and dark colour schemes as Chloe Sevigny demonstrates. You can try this look with either black sheer tights or emulate Sevignyâ??s choice of bare legs with black socks and peep-toe heels.
For another non-girly way to wear the trend, simply look to Julia Restoin Roitfeld, wearing another Louis Vuitton version of the skater dress. The navy leather pleated dress makes a bold statement, but the shoulder bow and perforated detailing on the hem softens the overall look.
Whatever your take on it, the skater dress seems to be a sassy way to make a statement this season while flattering your figure.
